Recommended Exams

The American Optometric Association (AOA) and American Medical Association (AMA) recommend that you have a vision-wellness exam once a year.

At Helms Family Optical, your vision exam includes far more than just testing for a prescription. First, we examine the lens for physical changes such as cataracts. Then we asses your corneal health, which is particularly important for patients wearing or considering contact lenses. We examine the pressure in your eye, to test for glaucoma. We then dilate your eyes to inspect your retina. We may opt to use digital imaging technology to scan the retina even more thoroughly, and record a “retinal fingerprint.” We then review the digital image scan with you, the patient.

And yes, we perform refraction tests to measure the optics of your eye and determine the prescription that’s appropriate for you.
